MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is an imaging technique that works by using a magnetic field and radio waves produced by a computer to generate detailed images of various organs and tissues present within the body. The magnetic field helps in the temporary realignment of the water molecules present within your body, whereas the radio waves help these atoms to generate signals, which eventually result in the formation of cross-sectional MRI images.

Uses
MRI can help in the detection and diagnosis of a disease, as well as help to monitor how your treatment is going.
Brain MRI can help to detect:

  • Vascular injury
  • Brain or spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Malignancy involving the brain or spinal cord
  • Stroke
  • Problems with visions
  • Problems related to the inner ear

MRI of the heart and blood vessels can help to detect:

  • Blockage in the blood vessels
  • Damage induced by heart attack
  • Structural defects of the heart
  • Heart diseases

MRI of the bones and joints can help to detect:

  • Bone cancer
  • Joint damage
  • Spine related disc problems
  • Pain in the neck and lower back
  • Infections involving the bones

MRI can also be done on other organs like breasts, liver, kidneys, ovaries, pancreas and prostate.

Procedure
An MRI machine is a long tube with open ends. You will be asked to lie down on a movable table, which will be, then, slowly slid into the machine. The machine produces a strong magnetic field and directs radio waves at your body. You will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure, however, there might be some tapping of thumping sound due to the movement of the internal part of the magnet present in the MRI scanner. If the images are not clear, a contrast material may be injected intravenously, for added clarity. The procedure may take about 15 minutes to an hour.
