An electrocardiogram, or ECG, is a diagnostic modality that is used to assess the heart rhythm and electrical activity of the heart. The procedure is carried out by connecting sensors to the patient's skin. These help to detect electrical signals generated by the heart, which are then recorded with the help of a special machine.
Indications
An electrocardiogram is performed with other diagnostic interventions to determine the underlying cause of symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness and dizziness. It can help to detect the following conditions:
- Arrhythmia
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart attack
- Cardiomyopathy
