Severe Gum Diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis need surgical methods to heal. During these inflammations, gums begin to separate from the teeth which causes spaces in between the tooth and the gums called periodontal pockets. These pockets trap bacteria and cause infections. If left untreated, this may lead to bone loss and even tooth loss.

Types of Gum Surgeries:

  • Flap Surgery: It is generally carried out for patients who have tartar deposits or deep pockets. The periodontist will lift the gums and remove the tartar deposits. After the procedure, they will suture the gums back into position.
  • Bone Grafting: This is done in cases where the bones surrounding the teeth are severely damaged. The periodontist will replace the damaged bone with a new bone
  • Guided Tissue Regeneration: In this procedure, a periodontist will insert a small piece of mesh-like material between a person’s bone and gum tissue. This allows the bone and connective tissue to regrow by preventing the gum from growing into the spaces where the bone should be.
  • Tissue Grafting: It is usually done to repair gum recession. During this procedure, your periodontist usually removes tissue from one part of the body and re-attaches it to the area where the gum has receded. The tissue often comes from the roof of the mouth.
  • Laser Therapy: This is done to reduce the size of pockets and restore damaged connective tissue
