Flap Surgery is a gum operation in which the gums are detached from the teeth and temporarily folded backwards to provide the dentist access to the tooth's root and bone. The primary purpose of flap surgery is to cure periodontitis. In the case of gingival flap surgery, the dentist is intended to remove any collected plaque and tartar from around the teeth and ensure that your oral hygiene is good.

Flap Surgery-Procedure:

  • During the flap surgery, the periodontist will inject a local anaesthetic to numb the area to minimize the pain.
  • The gums are separated from the teeth using a scalpel and then folded back in the form of a flap to obtain direct access to the roots and bones
  • The inflamed tissue is removed
  • Scaling and root planning are done to remove tartar and plaque deposits
  • In case of bony defects, resurfacing of the bone is needed. Periodontists will eliminate the bony defects by a procedure known as osseous recontouring that helps to smoothen the edges of the bone using rotating burs or bone files.
  • The gums are placed back into the normal position and sutured
  • The surgical site is covered with a periodontal pack or dressing
