Root Canal Treatment is done to repair and save a badly damaged or severely infected tooth instead of removing it. The procedure involves cleaning the canals inside the tooth and restoring it with a biocompatible material.
Why do you need to do a Root Canal?
If dental caries are left untreated, the bacteria dive inwards and enter inside the pulp, which is the ;vital structure of the teeth. As a result of this, pulp damage and inflammation happen which leads to periapical abscess. It causes severe pain, swelling, and sensitivity to the patient. In this case, to repair the damaged tooth, root canal treatment is done.
Root Canal Treatment Procedure:
- Your dentist will take an X-ray to understand the extent and severity of caries
- You will receive a local anaesthetic injection to control the pain
- A rubber dam is placed into your teeth for proper isolation
- Using an aerotor handpiece or caries excavator, your dentist will start removing the decayed surfaces of the tooth and gain access to the pulp chamber
- Using tiny instruments, the infected pulp is removed, the pulp chamber is flushed and;canals are cleaned
- After cleaning, the canals are filled with biocompatible materials
- A temporary filling is placed on the tooth, and after a few days it is restored with a permanent filling material
- A crown is placed over the tooth after some time to protect it from occlusal forces
