A Post and Core can be performed to keep a dental crown in place and to reconstruct, or build the missing portions of your tooth and it is mainly done after a root canal treatment. When a significant portion of tooth structure is removed, the post and core help to keep the dental crown in place. Dental crowns are placed above the tooth to protect it from further infections and damage.
When are the Post and Core placed?
It is usually done during the root canal procedure. If the remaining tooth structure is very small, a post is placed inside the root canals and is sealed to support the crown structure. The post mimics the function of natural tooth roots. After this, a crown is placed on the tooth surface.
Types of Post and Core procedures:
- Prefabricated Post and Core
- Cast Post and Core
Advantages of Post and Core:
- Helps to retain the tooth, eliminating the need for extraction
- Helps to anchor the tooth and protect it from trauma and infections
