Peripheral angiography or peripheral angiogram is a diagnostic procedure, that uses x-ray technology to detect and assess blocked arteries in the lower limbs. It is a catheter-based procedure that uses a minimally invasive approach.
Indications
Major indications of peripheral angiography include:
- Peripheral occlusive disease
- Intermittent claudication
- Critical limb ischemia
- Suspected femoropopliteal aneurysm
- Suspected thromboangiitis obliterans
- Suspected vascular trauma
- Tumours
- Arteriovenous malformations
Procedure
- The procedure is performed under the influence of sedatives, such that you do not feel any pain
- A tiny incision is made near the groin, through which the catheter is introduced into the artery.
- The catheter is guided towards the affected area with the help of detailed imaging guidance.
- Your doctor will administer a contrast material into your arteries for better visualisation
- This is followed by taking x-ray images
- If the doctors may feel the need, they will open the blockage simultaneously.
