Peripheral angioplasty is an advanced procedure that is performed to treat the conditions and ailments of the peripheral artery in the lower limbs. It aims at restoring the healthy flow of blood by clearing the obstruction, or stenosis. This is mostly caused by plaque accumulation, which refers to fat build-up. 

Indications
Angioplasty is recommended for the detection and assessment of peripheral arterial disease. It helps to determine the extent of instruction and devise a proper treatment plan to address the problem. 

Procedure

  • The procedure is performed under the influence of sedatives, to make sure that you do not feel any pain and discomfort.
  • A blood-thinning medication is administered to avoid the risks of clotting
  • You will be required to lie down on your back and a flexible tube, known as a catheter, will be introduced via the groin using a tiny needle. 
  • A dye may be injected into the patient's body for better visibility during x-rays.
  • The catheter fitted with a balloon on one of its ends is guided towards the affected area. 
  • Once it is in position, the balloon is inflated to open the obstruction.
