EP study stands for electrophysiological study, which is the diagnostic modality used for evaluating the electrical system of the heart. The natural electrical impulses help in coordinating the contractions in various different areas of the heart to ensure healthy blood flow. Also known as invasive cardiac electrophysiology, it was a series of tests that help to determine the underlying cause of arrhythmias.
Indications
EP study may be recommended in any of the following cases:
- The patient has arrhythmia
- The patient is experiencing fainting spells
- The patient is at risk of sudden cardiac death
- The patient is required to undergo cardiac ablation
