A tooth filling is a procedure used to treat a small hole or a cavity in a tooth. These cavities are formed as a result of the loss of enamel surfaces. When decay-causing bacteria come in contact with the remaining food particles, they form an acid. This acid attacks the tooth surface causing it to lose minerals. If tooth decay is not treated, it can cause pain, infection, and even tooth loss.To repair a cavity, the dentist will remove the decayed tooth surface and fill it with a restorative material.
Different Types of Dental Filling Materials:
- Silver amalgam
- Composite (tooth-coloured material commonly preferred now for esthetics)
- Gold
- Porcelain
- Glass ionomer cement
